Having a properly working air filter is one of the key factors in gas mileage. If you have a clog in your vehicle's air filter, your gas mileage will plummet and your car could frequently stall. Air filters should be replaced every 15,000 miles. This is a fairly simple procedure that costs little.

Water and antifreeze run through hoses in the engine to cool it off. Part of your routine car maintenance should be to check the antifreeze level before the winter season. Antifreeze will prevent water from freezing in your hoses. Understanding how the coolant system works on your car will help you realize how important flushing it can be to proper maintenance.

Most car batteries are permanently sealed, however, there are some that are not. If your battery  is not permanently sealed, you must check the battery fluid about 4 times a year. If the fluid is low, add some distilled water. Batteries should last nearly 10 years.

Brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years or 24,000 (which ever comes first). Each time you change your oil (about every 3 months), check the brake fluid level. You will be able to tell if your brake fluid is low because your brakes will become spongy.

The most commonly known car maintenance duty is changing the oil. Manufacturers used to say you must change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles (which ever comes first). However, newer vehicles say you should have your oil changed every 5 months. Use your owner's manual for an exact timeframe.

Power steering is made possible with power steering fluid. You should check to make sure your power steering fluid is full every 6 months. If you are going on a long trip, check before you leave.

 Transmission fluid

Transmission fluid is a car maintenance duty that is checked a lot more frequently than changed. You should check your transmission fluid every 3 months. However, you only need to replace it every 50,000 miles for rear-wheel drive cars and 25,000 miles for front-wheel drive cars. Car maintenance is very important to our lifestyles. Vehicles allow us to travel to work and earn a living. You must make sure you properly maintain your car so that it lasts as long as possible.
