This generation one system is much like its predecessor ODB11 in that the OBD1 system will flash trouble codes used for troubleshooting car electrical and engine problems. These codes are used to identify the system wherein the malfunction exists. After the specific repair has been performed simply remove the negative battery cable to clear the code in the computer's memory. If a problem still exists, sometimes it will not be apparent until the car has been driven at least 30 miles. This duration is necessary for the computer to "relearn" the condition of the operation system. If a problem still is present the check engine light will re-illuminate. Diagnostic Trouble Code numbers are read by plugging a code reader or scan tool into the vehicle diagnostic connector (usually located under the instrument panel near the steering column). The presence of a code will turn on the Check Engine Light. The light will remain on until the code has been erased. The code number does not tell you which part has failed. It only indicates a possible fault has been detected in the circuit, system or sensor described. Further testing is usually required to isolate the fault BEFORE repairs are made

Remember, these trouble codes are only a starting point, they are not specific. Automotive diagnostics will still need to be performed to find the actual cause of the code.
